Giclée Print? (pronounced jhee-CLAY)
The French word giclée describes a technique of spraying ink on paper or canvas. The term "giclee print" connotes an elevation in
printmaking technology. Industry-wide, it has become the printer's definition for quality-archival-fine-art, produced by digital print technology.
The technique produces a museum quality reproduction of the original drawings and sketches.
It involves generating images from high resolution digital scans and printing with archival quality inks onto various substrates including canvas, fine art, and photo-base paper.
The giclée printing process provides better color accuracy than other means of reproduction because it is color matched with the original.
Giclée prints are produced on acid-free,100% rag paper with pigment-based inks guaranteed not to fade for over 100 years.
Estimates are based on laboratory simulations of aging.
The quality of the giclée print rivals traditional silver-halide and gelatin printing processes and is commonly found in museums, art galleries, and photographic galleries.
Numerous examples of giclée prints can be found in New York City at the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Chelsea Galleries.
Recent auctions of giclée prints include: $10,800 for Annie Leibovitz, $9,600 for Chuck Close, and $22,800 for Wolfgang Tillmans (April 23/24 2004, Photographs, New York, Phillips de Pury & Company.)
They are the best looking digital prints available for fine art today.
